Lake County Educational Services is partnering with Northern Illinois University’s STEM Read for a one day opportunity to gamify fictional texts and hear from Kate Hannigan the author of The Detective’s Assistant. Through the day we will provide online resources to help students and teachers explore science, technology, engineering, and math concepts behind popular fiction books. Our standards-aligned activities and live games give students hands-on experiences with STEM that promotes collaboration, and fosters creative problem-solving skills. They also help students and teachers explore connections between STEM and the arts.

Educators, learn how you can use awesome books to create engaging gamified STEAM activities for your classroom.

~ Experience one of our book-based games.
~ Work in teams to solve hands-on challenges related the middle grade novel The Detective’s Assistant by Kate Hannigan. You’ll explore history, computational thinking, engineering, espionage, and more as you work with the Pinkertons to thwart an assassination attempt against Abe Lincoln!
~ Learn how we choose books and shape our activities around plot points and STEM concepts.
~ Meet author Kate Hannigan and learn how curiosity and questions drive her to research fascinating, forgotten history.
~ Come away with ideas and free resources to ignite students’ enthusiasm for reading and learning.
